Depends whatYou wanna do? The O&G are easily the most diversed army in the game.
Fast, Slow, Weedy, Hand to Hand, Scary, Kooky, Fun, Slaughter, Brutish, WTF, 50/50...

Two for one slot Bolt Throwers is a hoot. Killed the Dwarf King in two turns of a mega battle with something like 16 or 18 Bolt Throwers. Although the White Dwarf did have his vengence elsewhere.

Haven't used there newer book so I have no idea how good the newly returned Spider Riders are.

But I can say what has been good. Cheep Bolt Throwers, Goblin Fanatics, ganging up on enemy units for combat res. One theory also that goblin wolf riders with bows may be good. The current edition is trying to bring back Fast Cav by allowing them to march and shoot. In the last edition since Skirmishers were able to always march and shoot people generally kept away from the higher point cost Fast Cav.

In short Goblin Wolf Riders may be excellent warmachine/lone character hunters who can harras the side and rear flanks of enemey units. The guy (Ben) who played gobo lists in 6th used to focus on them with spears, that was a better option back then.

With the ganging up bit. If one can pull it off every army has at least one cheep core unit. It is when using these guys in sync with a 'harder' unit to win combat res through Unit Strength, Ranks, and hopefully canceling enemy ranks that win combats big. With a base cost of 3 pts on Goblins their Strenth 3 & Toughness 3 lets them laugh at my zombies at 4 points with a whole lotta '2s'.

One approach of blocked units with multi-ranked orcs or black orcs can work so long as they are not rellied on for just their killing potential alone. The Orc and Goblin army can be a complicated organism. Losing some fingers (i.e. Fast Cav outriding) to protect the heart (i.e. unit of Black Orcs) can seriously effect the flow of a battle.

Alternatively you can go big green. Probably save money and have some mean looking figs out. Not something I'd recommend against an enemy who is a good general. My approach against a big green force would be lock these expensive units in drawn out combats with foot infantry (where it doesn't matter who they cut down if I can raise them again) and then use my manuever ellement to get in the flank charges. Sometimes the manuver ellement gets in the charge that the ranked foot infantry then shows up and provides the combat res (not the ideal situation but it happens).

I thinks ya need to play Orcs more or play against them more.
Teh Goblin Bolt thrower is not all that great... Yes it has potential, but not that great.
I would take a Lobba over the chukka any day. Teh wolves are ok but I like to have a combonation of Spiders and wolves in my Gobbo army.
Any GOOD goblin army would not allow the big uglies to get "tied down by crap troops. Tahts what our crap troops are for, Goblins! except oh yeah guess which ones have the fanatics!!!
I do like Orc Magic...when it works. The Squigs are really cool too! I always throw a goblin boss on a giant Cave squig nowa days!!! just tons o fun! Teh hoppers are not as cool as they used to be but for sure a distraction the enemy cannot ignore.
Doom Divers are ok once again not as good as they used to be.
Don't forget your clumsy Giant or sweetness as I like to call him... Trolls are good to have a boss with! No point in taking Orc Arrer boyz really. More boyz and pile in behind teh Gobbos, they don't care if, sorry, when the goblins break.
I personally love boarboyz as a supporting role to my black orcs but tahts just me. I know I'm missing stuff but I don't have my stuff here at work...
I'll talk with ya soon.

ShockedShockedShocked

..umm, Chukkas are 35pts and 2 for 1

Lobbas are nice for hitting large blocks of Infantry, but enemy blocks of Infantry can be handled by... your blocks of Infantry.

Artillery is for those units which you cannot deal with otherwise. For O&G its fast, hard hitting Cavalry or small, elite, high intitiative Infantry or even Chariots, Treemen, Dragons, etc

Now don't be a twit and aim your Chukkas as Skaven Slaves, but you're not gonna point a Lobba at some Ogres either.

Played against them all the time back at Cincinati Scifi. Played as them in campaign before the newer book came out. Various casual play to one mega battle with proxies for Giants and a big mix of my old figures and a very experience Orcs & Goblin player.

Marc already covered the biggest reason for Bolt Throwers. Hitting that sweet armored Cav and being cheep. My impression is that the Bolt Thrower is a mid-range weapon so that it hits on 4s and draws fire from other more important units.

I am very interested in seeing how much of comback the Spider Riders made. After 7th came out the big gobbo player at WoHoG got busy with life.

My point was to help avoid the problems of fielding a too elite Orc army without goblin support. Also pointing out how I'd dissect an all big green force. All orc elite didn't work in the last edition and I am betting it won't in this one either.

And yes big ugglies get tied down all the time, reguardless of someone being a good player.

At least one unit of Boarboyz is always good. Hard Cav make for a nice stick. My advice to Kaaden if he uses them is not to just throw them at the enemy, unless he's hitting a soft flank defending unit. Use the them for either a mutil unit gang up charge or that second round of combat charge where they hit the flank of an enemy unit already fighting a nicely ranked unit of goblins or orcs.

Some of the important things you boys are forgetting is the factor of how the person plays. You could have two identical armies play and they will respond differently due to that major factor there. Something to keep in mind folks.

Actually Makari, Marc, and myself have all made comments with a basis on tactical approach and even Makari in his first post made a general strategic comment.

When people ask what they should buy I try and not to just say, buy-this or don't-buy-that. Rather laying out the academic advantages and personal experiences I've had.

Not to meantion the dice rolling factor. Another something to keep in mind.

Speaking back to the 'what to buy' it is seeing how they might define their approach and reactions to other people's efforts/experiments that answer the question more than anythinge else.

Ok regardless of how you will play the O&G I suggest buying like 3 boxes of Skull Pass...
Sell/Trade the dwarfs to someone else, or have a second army to play.
Those 3 box sets will give you a great start to an O&G army. I would also suggest heading to origins for Orcs. Last year I picked up 2 of the box sets of 6th ed. (ORcs vs. Empire) for $20!!! One dealer had big tupper ware bins full of metal minis for a $1 ea. and plastic was $0.25 ea. Needless to say I bought an ass load for real damn cheap and plan to do it again. If your not going let me know maybe we can work something out!

Dude, the sweet part about OG and is that they have all the awesome! You want to run horde? Got it! Elite beatdown army? That too! alien

Don't listen to any of these dudes! I am the supreme fantasy expert! testing out the smack talk!

What you gotta do is get at least one unit of Black Orcs...that way you got at least one unit that will do what you want it to do. Plus Black Orcs are arrow magnets...which means they die while everything else get's into combat.

Also, make sure you are paying attention when you are building your units of Goblins/Night Goblins. With the "Must be 5 men wide" for ranks, and with the sizes of the Golbin bases, it's better to run 6x6 units instead of 5x8

forget one or the other, take both...I am referring to Speak Chukkas and Rock Lobbas! farao

O, and Black Orc Warbosses roXXor.

Anyway, I could ramble on and on and on about the sweetness that is Orcs and Gobbos. The Wife plays them and she loves'em...I've played them and I love'em.

o...and always remember:

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!
