Those Black Guard would have just died outright to those Thunderers and only have a 6+ vs Quarrelers. In the end they are still T3, 5+
I agree on multiple Dark Rider units for Core and another 5 are on the way, but at this point level (500) shooting rules supreme. Maybe time to break out an RBT.
4 Dark Riders [rxb] 4 Dark Riders [rxb] 5 Cold One Knights [Full Comm] RBT
Fast and shooty _________________ 2nd place is the 1st loser

| at 2 for 1 on the RBT's, they are a good value, at low points, they may be better than the Black Guard. As far as shooting, you are right, shooting rules in war bands, the 2 units of Dark Riders are to cover them. Being fast cav that can shoot, if the dwarves put all their shooting on my stubborn Black Guard, that will give the Dark Riders opportunities for side charges and if I run into an army that can use ranks, at 3 per unit, the Dark Riders cancel ranks if they are ignored. It is about choices, if my enemy puts all it's shots into the Black Guard, then the Dark Riders rule the day. The Guard will be there till they all die. If not, the Guard will tie up and hurt any unit it engages. Even against Dwarves, the Sorc can help, if I get a movement spell, I can be on them before their shooting is very effective. But it comes down to the luck of the die on that one. I can also replace the sorc with a noble armed with Lifetaker, Blood Armor, Sea Dragon Cloak, extra hand weapon and a Shield which would be very tough for a dwarf to beat. On the Dwarves Magic resistance, I don't have a new codex for them, the old rule was that they generated an extra dispel dice. It may have been changed the magic resistance(1), but I don't believe so. |

| Dwarfs get an extra base Dispel Dice (..so 3 instead of 2)
I'm still undecided on Characters in Warband games. They seem like such a sink in a small game yet on the other hand are powerful enough to tip the balance.
Maybe we'll just have to move up to 1000pts _________________ 2nd place is the 1st loser

| | Yeah, I was thinking that too Marc. It just feels lame that my best list would be as many thunderers/quarrelers as I can fit and yours would probably be 2 RBTs and then dark riders. Hopefully at 1000 there is actually a need for other troops and heros. |

| | If anyone cares, I finally found the entry on the Dwarf resistance to magic. It is in the general rulebook and not mentioned in the Dwarf armybook. Basically Dwarfs bring 4 dispel dice base to the table instead of 2. So in a 500pt game it would be at best 4 power vs. 4 dispel which favors the dispel. Even at 1000pts dwarfs wouldn't have to be too concerned unless they were going up against a very magic loving army. |

| Magic is a whole other can I just dont want to bother with I've sketched several larger point lists and they always have just a simple level one clutching a pair of Dispel scrolls. Its either that or going all out with a level 4 and a pair of level 2s ..dunno. _________________ 2nd place is the 1st loser

| it depends on the army list, with Dark Elves, their +1 to cast is useful. If I know my opponent is dwarves, leaving the mage at home and bringing a hero would be my first choice. The RBT's do hold up better against a shooty army but wouldn't be good in a general list . Against Dwarves, I think I would field: Noble (1#, 144 Pts) 1 ~[(^One or more selected options present a potential usage conflict]×~[(#]Dark Elf Noble @ 144 Pts Commander; Hand Weapon; Extra Hand Weapon; Sea Dragon Cloak; Shield; Hate High Elves 1 Dark Steed @ [0] Pts 1 Lifetaker @ [30] Pts 1 Blood Armor @ [20] Pts
Dark Riders (3#, 72 Pts) 3 Dark Riders @ 72 Pts Hand Weapon; Repeater Crossbow; Spear; Light Armor; Fast Cavalry; Hate High Elves 3 Dark Steed @ [0] Pts
Dark Riders (3#, 72 Pts) 3 Dark Riders @ 72 Pts Hand Weapon; Repeater Crossbow; Spear; Light Armor; Fast Cavalry; Hate High Elves 3 Dark Steed @ [0] Pts
Shades (7#, 105 Pts) 7 Shades @ 105 Pts Hand Weapon; Repeater Crossbow; Light Armor; Hate High Elves; Scouts; Skirmishers
Reaper (3#, 100 Pts) 1 Reaper Bolt Thrower @ 100 Pts Hate High Elves; Repeater Bolt Thrower 2 Crew @ [0] Pts Hand Weapon; Light Armor
Total Roster Cost: 493
It isn't the best list, but DE's never did do well against Dwarves. |
