what does the d6 for damage do/mean for the cannon?

I did some research, when you hit, you do 1d6 damage to each model you wound instead of just one. I also found out that things like chariots blow up if hit by a str 7 hit or higher. Other words, you kill them instantly with one str 7 hit or higher.
