| I'm getting together my first 40k army, and, before I even started playing, Necrons appealed to me. What i've got is in my sig, but i'm hoping to get the rest from E-bay, or the mall, which ever comes first. I was hoping for some pointers, or ideas on an effective lineup, but what I'm looking to get is a Monolith, surround it with Elites, and send some Fast Attack, mainly Wraiths (I like Wraiths :]), as well as a pantload of Troops, in for the kill. Any input is appreciated. | |

| With 5th coming out in less than a week and troops being highly emphasized, you may want to add a few more units of warriors right off the bat. Also 14 av on the monoliths is really effective with new vehicle damage chart (get 2 if possible, ie two towers tactic). A lord on a destoyer body kicks for the 2nd hq choice. Fast and heavy destroyers gives you fast movers with solid fire power. As far as the elites choice goes, you gotta like those immortals (assault 2 at str. 5 and T 5, nice!), beef up that choice. And last but not least a C'tan, with the new run rule, people won't be able to keep him away as easily (either one is a monster in close combat). That's my 2 cents. | |

| You definitely need 2 monoliths LOTS and LOTS of Necron Warriors. I would say like 60 of em all told. Destroyers and Heavy destroyers are nice. Outside of those things I do not know Necrons that well. The more necrons the better so you do not phase out. | |

| Uh, 60 warriors plus two liths is like 1600 pts and you haven't even bought a lord yet.
If you want that many warriors you can really only take 1 monolith.
In general, Necron lists do well when things are in pairs, since the WBB rule requires the model to be near another non-destroyed model for a chance to stand back up. This is my primary tactic against necrons. An army with only one unit of immortals or destroyers will die for good if you can get them to all fall over at once.

| I was really just tossin out numbers but I meant to say 2 units of 20 I forgot about the doublin up. Most people do that so you can always have a way to bring your boys back. | |

| 2 or 3 units of 10 should be enough really, then add some of the more specialized units. Just make sure they are all necrons, as imo you are really hurting your phase out if you start dumping lots of points in things that a) aren't necrons or b) dont help you get necrons back (like the monolith does). | |

Lord with Orb would bring you to a cozy 1750

| But it would also be extremely boring to play, not to mention mince meat against certain opponents. | |

| 60 warriors is way too many. You need to throw in a few specialty units/monoliths for that "punch"! Now with the new vehicle damage table, guass weapons won't be as effective as they used to be. | |

| Lord with res orb
immortals or perhaps flayed ones (with the new outflanking rules in 5th)
2 ish units of 10 warriors
destroyers
and 2 monoliths
pretty standard list, but one that works well.

I personally really like Wraiths... so, any type of army I put together, I'll want to include at least a unit or two of them.

| If you are going to use wraiths use at least two units of three. redundency is key with the necrons. I personally like three units of three running with a necron destroyer lord with orb and warscythe (wraith storm). It really freaks people out, comes completely unexpected most of the time and is a bitch to deal with, 5th edition may taylor that down for an extra troop choice. I think the veil will become important for last minute objective taking.

Yeah, redundancy is important for any army (to me, at least - I leave as little up to the dice as I can), but especially for the Necrons. Three units of Warriors is a great start (one unit of 20, two of 10 for 40 Warriors). I'm a big fan of the dual Monolith tactic, but that wraith storm army sounds interesting as well. I'd advise against a C'Tan, even with the new Run rules they're waaay too many points that could be better spent on more Necrons. A smart player will ignore the C'Tan and destroy the rest of your army.
