small unit.. but perfect for infiltrating and annoying your opponent. good.

heres where things go a little awry. if you are looking to have a solid core of footsloggers.. these guys will be shot to bits by turn 2. i would reccommend beefing up your troops. my suggestions would be to bring both squads to 10 men and giving the second a exarch with the same set up as the first squad. i realize you probably just dont have the models.. but if you want to get another 10 avengers it would be a good purchase. (proxy them first, though.. or borrow mine when i get down to cincy)

AMAZINGLY fun and fluffy unit. i love them. very points-heavy in a 1000 pts list however. cool models too

awesome! another fluffy choice.. but they as well as the spears.. are VERY hard to master. Tactically get ready for these 2 units to feel worthless in your first few battles.one bad move and these babies are gone. so be patient and it will pay off.
HEAVY SUPPORT

good choice. 2 is better than 1 BUT obviously there is no room for the points. Save some points and drop the star engines because mostly you will be shooting.. and your fast so you can go 24" (or what is it.. 18 now?) at the end of the battle to grab an objective if you really need to. Its fast enough. Also.. vectored engines. On a tank with troops in it it makes sense.. but the fire prism is only a gunship. if it gets immobilized it will be worthless anyways. you dont need vectored engines.
this frees up some points for an exarch for your second squad of avengers.

| Also know that the hawks have been FAQed to be able to yo-yo, aka skyleap every turn and never actually spend time on the board during an opponents turn. Just make sure you buy them their grenade pack to drop on an enemy each turn they deep strike back in. | |

| After seeing most of this army in action I can say one thing you really should add are units that can deal more damage. The fire prism is a good start.
You have a lot of troops that can shoot high volumes of small arms fire (str 3 and 4) but you have almost nothing higher than that. Against horde armies you will do well, but against space marines (which are the most common army you will see) or necrons or anything else with good armor you will hardly be able to kill any of them. Remember, it takes 10 str 4 shots to kill 1 space marine on average.
With only a 1000 points currently you still have lots of room to expand.
I would suggest Dark Reapers (str 5 ap3 weapons). 10 of those guys would do some killing.
Another fire prism is always good.
2 words: HOWLING BANSHEES. Int 5 and they all have power weapons (look in the army list entry). I'm not sure if anything else needs to be said about them.
The Avatar is pretty rad. He's really hard to kill and he smashes squads of infantry to tiny bits (beware the dreadnoughts though). | |

| Problem with what Mike just suggested is that it doesn't include any more core troops.
You will be decimated in any objective game with only 2x5 dire avengers capping for you. | |

| Yeah, Matt is right. Definitely get more troops too. I would shoot for 10 more guardians/dire avengers. | |
