Gen Con 2008 - I'm wiped out Empty
PostSubject: Gen Con 2008 - I'm wiped out   Gen Con 2008 - I'm wiped out EmptyMon Aug 18, 2008 10:59 am

OK so I thought I'd give a little summary of GC 2008.

What a great weekend (aside from the fact that Danny nearly broke my ARM and thinks that women wear doilies....no Danny - those are lace stockings and a garter).

Gaming of every type. Board games, mini games, demos, computer games, Collectibles etc...

New stuff I tried.

GAME: Monster Apocolypse by Privateer Press.
Review: Cool Minis and Visually awesome. Good paint jobs on the Prepaint. Gameplay was pretty simple but the concept is cool. Word on the street though is long term the game is a "stinker" but that may be from the Warmachine and Hordes guys. The market for Monster Apoc may be 14-18 and drive players into the more advanced game.
Negative is that it is Collectible.

GAME/FIGS: Pulp City. www.pulp-city.com
Review: I only watched the game played. Figures are better in person then on online images IMO. I still didn't pick any up. Most of my friends who got demos were really big on the game and said it was a blast. Looks to need a little more work on the line. I'll be interested to see it at next Gen Con

Game/Figs: Wyrd - Game is Malifaux. This is a minis company that has slowly been developing a game for their oustanding scuplts. If you haven't seen their stuff check it out at http://wyrd-games.net/index.php
Game is still in development. They are having issues in balancing the statlines at this point and only would let you "watch" a demo of the developers playing. They have scrapped 2 previous versions and started over from scratch. I'll be interested to see if a beta test is opened but again...not enough solid information to make it a choice for play moving into 2009. I did buy some more of their figs for painting. Ortega gunslingers featuring Perdita.

Game: Alkemy http://www.kraken-editions.com/
Demoed by TTG. Very reminiscent of old confrontation mechnically (not surprising since the game designer is the same). Figs. Very good. They are plastic that assembles with a grove and socket (think snap tight). The figs seem like True 25mm. Very small with very small detail. The figs in the case for future release looked good. I don't like any of the 4 lines as much as other companies. I ended up buying a starter deal at the end of the Con though.

Things I ran

Infinity Demos
We had 30 players show for Infinity Demos which is good since you had to have a ticket. We only had 6 slots that were available over the 3 days.

Many bought into the game. Overall a lot of heavy interest. www.thewarstore.com was at the con with a booth with Infinity. They sold it an additional price break for folks who got a TTG demo.

Infinity Tournament
10 players for the tournament. 3 rounds swiss style. Cool tables with almost 100% of the armies painted. Can't wait for next years event.

Confrontation 3 tournament
What was supposed to be a fun event turned a little sour. We had 14 guys show.
We eliminated a lot of the restrictions placed on Army construction on the game by the tournament management group. The thought being just come and have fun. Well 5 guys showed up with lists meant to really give the opponent a beating. The other 9 just wanted to play Conf with their buddies. I don't fault either group...they just have different ideas of what was fun. I ended up trying to place the guys w/ the beatstick lists across from one another and the guys who wanted to have fun with each other although that wasn't always possible.

Evening activities
THR NIGHT: Dinner at St. Elmos steakhouse....yuuum

FRI NIGHT: Played wingman while watching '300' and drinking Brews at the RAM until 2 am w/ a couple gamer chicks that we didn't know but picked us up at an infinity demo. (3 hours of sleep)

SAT NIGHT:
Played a 300 pt 20 fig game of Infinity with buddy. EPIC defeat for Mr. T
Drinks at the Wild Beaver (think coyote ugly) until 3am followed w/ steak and shake. - 2 hours of sleep

Sounds like you guys had a blast, thanks for sharing!

I recently picked up the starter box for Pulp City with a buddy of mine, he got heroes i got villains. After two games of it, it seems pretty fun... although you do need a lot of "extra" bits and what not for all the scenarios. Specific types of buildings and civilians/minion (secondary characters) and so on. Still the models are pretty cool and have a lot of character, and the game plays pretty smoothly!

If anyone has any questions about i'll try to answer!

You should have stopped by. We had an extra day pass on Thr. I ate lunch next to Joe Theisman at the Conrad that day too.

The collectable part is like a finger in the eye.

Bought a bunch of it anyways. It is casual nutty fun.

Nick wanted the cat people so on general principle I bought some of the chinesse looking folks. The plant avelons freaked me out too much.

Missed out on the Infinity with these six day work weeks. No painting on anything.

Gencon was a blast. Found a nice place that had cheap Warhammer stuff and that one guy with the boxes of random stuff was back as well. Got me three box's of dark elf executioners and some gundam 00 models as well.
