Not Going to visit again Empty
PostSubject: Not Going to visit again   Not Going to visit again EmptyFri Aug 29, 2008 11:43 pm

I hate to do this but I have to say that SciFi city will definitely be Wareagles and my Home playing field. After visiting illumanadi this evening I was very dissappointed. The 40k and the Fantasy players had to beg and plead to get more then a cramped back room, and then on top of that had to bring the toilet paper to use the rest room. Usually this would not bother me but the place had all the warm of an iceberg to it. It almost seemed that we were putting the place out by being there. I understand that there are other games there but it was just a major disappointment to feel like the red headed step child in a gaming store. Well I am done with this any one care to share their point of view of how tonight went. Enjoy see you all later.

It's a more convenient location for many of us, but really the least nice store.

I stopped by to say hey for a little bit, but I certainly don't look forward to going there by any means.

Does it have potential? Certainly. And altahara seems determined to improve it, but it seems to be at a huge disadvantage in terms of monetary and attitude support from the management.

I do agree it is closer, I just believe that I would much rather drive out to SciFi then to go to a place that I do not feel welcomed at.

PostSubject: Re: Not Going to visit again   Not Going to visit again EmptySat Aug 30, 2008 12:09 am

I am going to agree with those comments. When I walked into the store there were about 8 magic players taking up two or three tables. Apparently before I showed up a couple of the guys had asked for some more table to play 40K on and were told no that they were needed for a magic tournament. I can total understand that and really I have no problem with it, but after your tournament was supposed to start and no one shows up maybe make a gesture of seeing if we needed some more room.

Here is a little side note to all you game store owners/managers...I understand that you have other games played in your stores and I am all about first come first serve on tables, but when you have 20 games workshop players come to your store you MAY want to show some accommodation and maybe a little friendliness towards them. The 40K/Fantasy group here in Cincinnati is composed of mostly 20+ year old people with decent jobs and LOTS of money to blow on stupid shit in your stores. Most of us have 2 - 4 armies per game and are buying crap all the time. I dont care if you have 50 kids come by magic cards all the time they still wont blow the kind of money we will or can in your store.

I was told by a store owner a couple of weeks ago that if I came in and wanted to purchase $600+ worth of 40K stuff he wouldnt cut me a deal, you all know what the mark up on GW stuff is and you know that you can give discounts if you really want to. So not only am I not going to buy my army from that store I probably wont buy blisters and other odds and end that I normally would.

Games Workshop players in general are pretty loyal to their favorite store, discount or no. Most if not all also play other games not even related to GW. So by not showing some kind of love for us is really shooting yourself in the foot. I am not saying that we should get special accommodations, but you may want to reconsider moving your loyal magic teens, who spend $5/week on blisters, to the back of the store and let they guys who bring in loads up on loads of crap that they bought into your store to play.

All in all, I was extremely disappointed in TCG/ILL and will probably never go there again. All the people I met up there tonight were very cool and fun to play and hang out with all in all. Whoever owns that store may want to have discussion with their employees about watching TV all night and hanging out with friends, about maybe helping out the customers and making sure there is nothing we need, remind him that the things we purchase help to write his paycheck at the end of the week.

PostSubject: Re: Not Going to visit again   Not Going to visit again EmptySat Aug 30, 2008 12:31 am

I'm of the same mind. Negatives just off the top of my head.
1. Worst parking ever. I cant see ever holding a tournament there even if the entire front room was used for wargaming. who would want to haul all their stuff down the block / across the road.
2. lights left off. sorry buddy, I know your keeping down the bill but it keeps the people happy.
3. the gamers would be happy to bring their own terrain, books, and good chear... the LEAST you can do is supply some toilet paper!
4.There shouldn't have been unused machinery tucked away in the back room. potential hazard.

good stuff off the top of my head
1. potential for lots of space for events
2. after having visited around november of last year I walked out laughing at the wretched state of the place. I can honestly say that it does look 250% better than it was.
3. there is a sink in the back are where the firs set of tables were. that could be used as an improvised painting station for people hanging out. rearange the area and put a table and some comfy chairs with the tv playing. people could paint and watch tv while people gamed around them.
4. I dont know what those display cases were but they reminded me of fish tanks for some reason. I would suggest at the least knocking out that area, even if the dividing wall remained and add dedicated space for wargaming and / or space for lots more product. tshirts, board games from fantasy flight. settlers of catan.... those best sellers that everyone loves.
5. if that area behind the store can be used for parking PLEASE change the old sign back there and post a huge one letting people know that they can use the area!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, good luck, sincerely.
i may check back in after...... a while

See and this is disappointing. But proves a good point. And let me mention one other thing, the person that has been busting his ass for us is Kendell. He is the onlyone with by all means for sure the best stock and let alone, wants to give us as much support as possible. I don't see that anywhere else and this makes me a loyal UU&A customer. And here he is doing it again on Friday night by hosting the WH40K Midnight run. Supplying possible 6 tables of game play, AND putting up prizes and so forth. If this isn't dedication. I don't know what is.

CJ-- Here, here! Totally agreed about UU&A. Love the store. I buy from Kendall even if I can get it cheaper elsewhere because he's willing to go above and beyond.

JT-- I meant to say, "Where do people MAKE you feel welcome." Really a feeble attempt on my part.

In terms of the Illuminadi... It really is a shame there is so much underutilized space in that joint, as well as the rediculous amount of old stock that they really just need to get rid of. Honestly, were I the manager, I'd host an end of summer sale, get rid of some of the shitty, old ass stock that has been passed on from THREE owners in the past two years, have some grills, barbeque, etc., and try and generate some good will for those--as many have previously posted--that can and ARE WILLING to spend money on a hobby they enjoy.

when i see the owner again i/and probably lupus.. are going to talk to him..

im glad my attempts are recognized, but lupus is also helping to make it better, and mendin is a great addition to the 40 playing.. even if he has to proxy my guard as necrons LMAO..

im going to show him this thread.. i was really really disappointed... we told that kid that was working there on monday that there would be 12+ and we recommended having the bathroom stocked.. i believe he did tell us about magic, but JESUS you dont need 12 tables for 8 guys.. i tried to explain this point to him but he was way to belligerent (i think thats the word i want)
i offered to build regular tables for him to put out in the main area, which would also work for card gaming if you had stools.. was put on back burner until he saw what type of crowd he could get for it.. which i mildly understand.. sinking money into something that might not be profitable.. if he sinks it in and no one shows... but ANYONE who has ever played 40k as an actual hobby can attest to how much we will spend on a WEEKLY basis if we meet on a certain night and the stock is there...
i will still attempt to make this a better home for 40k players... but my patience is wearing thin.. i can walk to this place.. but the drive is starting to sound more favorable..

just my two cents... ok maybe thats a quarters worth.. but eh

Yes Kendall is awesome and I will definitely be ready and willing to go up there again. But you can't say that Kendall is the only one that is helping us and is willing to go out his way for us. I have always had a great feeling and a great sense of help from the guys at Sci-fi. They allowed JGemrich to hold a painting contest there just for us CAGers!!! I would have to say that my two stores will be Up, Up and away and Sci fi. I would be willing to play at Yotta Quest because they were accommodating in the way of having several table available to us and I like their "backroom" , As far as buying stuff, I won't buy stuff from them because they didn't have anything that I needed/wanted. As far as Ill., unless some drastic changes are made I will not be coming back.

Point taking Noek, I know Eric and the guys at Sci can only do so much and he has to go through the owners. Eric should get props too. He is the man that at least got us some space to play and they have been ausome as well. But you get the picture were I was going with this.

I wont try and debate who is doing more o less for the community, but I will give huuuge props to Sci Fi for allowing that much space to be used!! In a mall setting the $ per square foot is way way up there. Acme has also done a lot and does hold events and intro games. I'm looking forward to next Friday and heading over to UU&A to see Kendalls store (love the work on the website if the store half as nice..) Yotta has a nice place, needs a coat of paint on the walls in the back gaming area and some felt for their boards. A better stock of GW would be good as well. Still I did like the place and they are really working to get people gaming with their meetup groups for different RPGS and hosting the 'Ard Boyz 2008 Qualifier.
That being said here is a quick thanks to those retailer who have worked hard to keep the ball rolling.

LGS in this city have always fallen short. Every single one. The old World of Hobbies had the best approach, unitl Mr Greedy caught a case of big eyes.

We just need our own "clubhouse" and let the stores do their thang.

If only UU&A and Scifi weren't both sort of near each other and kinda far from me. Somehow the north/east side can't keep a store.

LGS success is inversly proportional to the distance CJ is from the store. lol

The past two Saturdays I have been the guy opening up Sci-Fi City....

and...

....and I have REALLY MISSED you guys!!!

I apologize for those mornings when I'm not real with it, cuz I haven't had enough caffeine inb me - but if you give me a heads up on the Saturday mornings you want to play early - I'll open the doors early for all of 'you. (you guys got all those boxes, and cases...I know what thats like)

Really, I'll do better....come on back....I miss you guys and all those miniatures I don't know the names yet. (I'm working on it tho )

IF I ever play - it'll probably be Tau or Cadians.

Those were my beds. And Frost Wolf does bring up a good point about Hobbytown. They have a good staff and a large supply of Fantasy and 40k. The only downside is lack of good size boards and terrain.

I had high hopes when Hobbytown was moving into their new digs. A nice large area in the way back for gaming space, right? *sigh* Lets be honest... Hobbytown has crap for space.
