Last I heard, the actual virtual tabletop program won't be done for another few months. All you'd be paying for currently are the Dragon and Dungeon Insider articles.

have you thought of using a PBP (Play by post ) site?

is a FANTASTIC site!

it's co managed by a fellow who lives in Westchester
there are litterly thousands of players running games in this format
and just as many sharing data and articles
there is also a publicly viewable spreadsheet for character sheets so you can view progress and keep up

As of right now D&D Insider is $5 a month (if you buy a 12 month subscription) for only Dungeon and Dragon magazines as well as the D&D Compendium and some online content. Once they get the other stuff up and running, they'll increase the price (who knows how much, but they have mentioned it will go up).

Right now, D&D Insider isn't actually up and running. I'd hold off and see how the virtual tabletop turns out. It might be neat, it might not.
