PostSubject: The Hammer Strikes   Thu Oct 11, 2007 4:31 pm

So after reading Marc's post and jumping up and down in celebration of rending Wulfen I did what I always do, Math. Specifically I compared 15 old wulfen vs. 15 new wulfen. Same points cost.

15 old wulfen have 60 attacks on the charge and they normally get the charge due to the animal rage fleet-like rule. The always hit on a 3+ and with Str 5 usually wound on a 3+ as well (assuming Meq) This translates to 40 hits, 26.67 wounds and 8.88 kills.

New wulfen start out the same with 60 attacks. However now odds are the 10 will rend. This leaves thirty normal hits, 20 wounds and 6.67 killed, added back to the 10 rends is 16.67 kills.

This is an 87.5% increase in killing effectiveness versus Meq opponents.

Comparing the results against varying toughness, the percentage increase in kills from old to new is as thus:
T3: 65%
T4: 87.5%
T5: 125%
T6: 200%

This is to be expected as the number of normal wounds drops precipitously and the 10 rends remains constant, the percentage increase between old and new reached infinity at T8.

A similar results exists comparing different saves at T4.

5+: 31%
4+: 50%
3+: 87.5%
2+: 200%

Therefore the new wulfen would be the bain of nurgle terminators or some such. And this does not even address their ability to now kill armor greater than 11. Hooray.

So that this might actually turn into a post, do you guys remember such a tiny rule change (and a fluffy one I might add) that made a unit so much better?

First off, I want to say how glad I am they changed this. It adds so much to the squad, makes them worth taking for a change. Not only that, but it makes the army way more appealing in my eyes. Not just nerfed Space Wolves anymore.

Thinking of a rule like this is tough, one I can think of is being able to over power 3.5 ed chaos lists, compared to 3 ed chaos lists. They got a ton more effective.

This is a pretty major change as far as I can remember though, anyone else?

CJ hasn't been playing long enough to have any of these, any of the vet gamers?

BTW, I don't even take the stats that far! That is why John is the math hammer!

Yeah, it's really better in graphical form. Sadly I can't upload excel charts. I'll have to practice copying them, pasting into jpgs and then linking to them on the forum. I'm actually thinking about creating a 3D graph comparing all toughness and armor save combinations, although I'd have to go into work to run MathCad.

You guys are funny, doggin on someone who shows some smarts.

I would appreciate the graphs marc, for the forum especially. Hopefully it would help people learn the rolls. CJ for one constantly asks what he needs to roll or just says an arbitrary number. The roll charts are something that every player should know by heart after just a few games.

Maybe having the graphs could help it click for certain people.
