Truly interesting and very real. If you have to cheat to win, then don't play!

On #6- Wayno was telling me this past weekend about playing an opponent and he would roll his dice in a box that Wayno couldn't see the results of the rolls. He finally got fed up and said something to him when he was making a miraculous amount of positive rolls.

There are a lot of whiny bitches out there. I guess that's why I play for fun, regardless of how cheesy the list may be.

I mean, sure, but I know I'd error in the benefit to my opponent in any discrepancy because I'd rather enjoy playing than win. If I win, that's great too, but for me it's more the experience of playing.

1.when you've been playing for 10+ years you get rules mixed up. Add in playing more than one army, more than one game(war machine, ect) a fairly new edition, real life issues like jobs and spouses, and sometimes grey rule writing and you have something thats a lot more easy to say and do. The rule book is there so you don't have to remember everything. for example for the past 9 years my battle wagon has been able to move and shoot all of it's big shootas, I've played 4 games with them in 5th and had to be told every other game they could no longer do that.

2. Ugh, where do I start, List can be unbeatable, If a new player is just starting out and you bring the twin last list of doom, knowing before hand this is his first game, you are an ass. If you are playing a friend and he can't beat your army, if you fail to tone it down a little, your an ass. Building a list to to beat a list leads to meta gaming, and that leads to whole armies not being taken, IE Teir 1, 2, 3, ect armies. If everybody sees your list and rolls thier eyes something is wrong.(cut short to prevent ranting)

3. Sigh, ok. If you go to a casino to have fun thats a good thing, If you goto a casino to win, you have a gambling problem. Same with gaming, If you have fun gaming thats ok. If the only fun you can get out of gaming is winning you have a problem. there is a huge difference in wanting to win, and Obsessing about winning. you can always tell these people because they can't take losing in stride, cursing and calling everything around them every name in the book. They take the most powerful units, combine it with all the little loop-holes they can find, and top it all off with B*&^%ing if things don't go their way. These types of gamers that you see scaring costumers out of stores with their yelling, breaking up gaming groups with their argumentive ways, and spreading the stero-type that gamers are complaining, whiney, unfriendly, lonely basement dwellers. You see people like this when you see coachs yelling at 5 year olds in a pee-wee football game. And parents yelling at little girls before a pee-wee beauty pagent.
Eventually people quit going to turnies at all, 2008 turnout was low, and at the very least 2 major events in the US. To me the worst thing about these players is that they don't care about the 20 years of the hobby,The people they play, or even thier own armies. they care about winning. And soon as something more powerful comes along, it's time to e-bay and go on to the next big thing.

4. goes without saying

5 I agree with

6. I agree with

I really only do the local tourney's, but I guess I have been lucky in that I have seen very little to none of the issues in that article.

Seems to me locally, tourney turn out has been very good. Seems every event I have been to has been full. At least the last couple of years. I have met some really cool people, some I now call friends. I can't really remember an opponent I had an issue with. Except you silly Ork Horde players!... Would be nice to get past turn 3 with you guys!

Maybe we just have it good around here.

Did someone say meta gaming?

I swear I heard meta gaming. I got all excited.

And what's with people complaining about orks so much? They really aren't that overpowered. Take some some thunder hammer termies. That'll fix noob bikers easy.

Five months later...

And what's with people complaining about space marines so much? They really aren't that overpowered. Take a huge swarm of termagaunts. That'll fix thunder hammer termies easy.

Five months later...

And what's with people complaining about tyranids so much?...

I haven't been playing forever, but I've been around long enough to see some bad behavior and outright cheating. Unfortunately 40K is subjective and/or poorly written in a lot of areas. Fortunately, the community in general seems more mature to me than it did a few years ago.

The competitive players I meet nowadays recognize that being a bad sport will hurt them wherever they play, so people have learned to be polite and work through the rules. Those that don't learn to play nice usually move on to other things, at least around here, because it doesn't take long for them to use up the goodwill and tolerance of more mature veterans.

The big thing that gets my goat at tournaments recently are "grade grubbers", players that deliberately put on their best used car salesman attitude to convince you what great guys they are. When I was younger I'm sorry to say I did it too, I'm not perfect! I'm older now, and while I can put up with people fudging things a little, or being very competitive in game, gratuitous compliments and false smiles bother me.

I know competitive players, who win tourneys, who are genuine and want to have fun as well. Obviously it's tough to lose a game and know you're out of contention, but it's a sign of real sportsmanship to be able to laugh at crappy rolls or losing your HQ, and still be laughing and chatting after the game and tournament.

I am happy to make friends from Cincinatti and Columbus, guys I can go out to lunch with and talk about games and fluff, smack talk and joke with. In the end that's the real reward of this hobby.

After playing Fantasy for 17 years with a private group of guys, it was nice to make that transition to 40k 3 years ago and start playing at stores first then progressing to tourneys. The people I've met over those 3 years not only taught me more about the game in terms of interpretation and understanding, but in terms of friendly sportsmanship. Yeah there are some real dickheads out there, but your general player is there to have a good time like myself and not trying to bend the rules in their favor. As Kirby said, I've met some really cool people in that time, most that have remained good friends.
