So... I think we are giving Planet Strike a go.

Bring a 750 and 1500 pt list so if we have an odd number of players we can all get around a table for fun.

I'll have both an attacker and defender list.

Matt won the game (2 objectives to 1). I forgot (not sure how) that contested objectives go to the attacker.

Overall it is a pretty bloody game and you get into HTH very quickly.

My termies rolled up his termies and took and objective. The LR got taken out by 2 Multi Meltas within 12 inches from the Dreadnaughts (although we forgot a dread was stunned/shaken for the round but played on).

The yellow Dread of doom took out my Libby but only after 3 rounds of HTH.

Matt's Termie w/ Cyclone launcher got in contact with the Bastion for the win. He had 1 Tactical squad on the 3rd objective. I was trying to push him off and or engage but was unsuccessful as I moved a combat squad of stern guard up.


Learnings.

Wooo weee.... Does it get bloody fast. I'm not sure if I should have had more or less units in reserve to start. I spready my units between 2 objectives. Matt (correctly IMO) ganged 1 objective then broke away after decimating that portion of my force to take objective 2 and 3.


Things that were cool.

1) autofire after the attackers Deepstrike moves are fun with the "gun" emplacements. Keeping a unit touching these guns to give the BS4 vs BS2 is a big improvement but not always feasible. This also keeps the Enemy from deepstriking into a fire cooridor or creates other issues if they want to DS around the battle field (Necrons though a mono... Gate of Infinity...etc). I think I'd take more the 4 shot autocannons vs the Las cannon.

2) Stratagems used.
Defender:
Minefield: Allows a minefield to be placed over a unit about to run which will count as dangerous and difficult terrain for the remainder of the game. This piece of terrain killed 2 terminators and 5 assault marines This was really thanks to Matt's rolling a Yahtzee of 1's as his assault marines entered/exited the terrain piece.

Ammo Dump: Allows a piece of terrain that a unit is in contact w/ to reroll to hit rolls. Effectiveness. Not much. Forgot about my reroll w/ a thunderfire cannon. much better with a devastator squad or other 1 shot heavy weapons in contact.

Escape hatch: Allows a unit in a bastion to disembark up to 18 inches away from the bastion. Awesome. I was able to sneak up behind the dreads and take 1 out w/ 5 sternguard. You could also use the hatch to allow a unit to move back to the bastion to contest the objective. 1 question would be if the bastion is destroyed is the hatch still active?

Attacker Stratagems.
Cursed. Matt cursed my bastion so it's weapons were required to roll. on a 1,2,3 they were cursed and could not fire for the turn. Pretty effective. My bastion was in a corner so only 2 of the guns really had a firing lane anyways. It was pretty effective.

Night fight. A 4+ ends the night fight. We pretty much forgot about this for the game.

I'm not sure if there was a 3rd stratagem for Matt or not.

3) Herding. By leaving open lanes of fire you can force you attacker to use those lanes to get on you quickly (and get shot up) or use cover and roll for difficult/dangerous terrain. This can give you the needed time to slow them down on the approach, force them to DS where they'd rather not.

4) Aegis defense lines. If I had a bit more time before the enemy was on me I might have used the defense lines to go to ground. Especially during the firestorm barage (not sure if that is the correct name). By going to ground I believe I'd have stayed there for the remainder of round 1 and for the first volley of incoming fire at a 2+ cover save. Probably a bigger win armies with poorer armour saves. Also, you don't totally give up shooting b/c your automatic weapons can do some damage to the enemy.


5) Bloody.... there were a lot of figs removed round 1 and 2. As the defender you can feel down pretty quick. But with good stratagems, terrain set up and correct mix of figs you can turn the tide quickly. You can also get bogged down in close combat. This can leave your big guns with very little to shoot at. Hence a my land raider crusader really didn't have any "effective" targets despite coming onto the board in round 2 even if I came in on a better board edge.


Overall I'd definately play again. The terrain pieces that support the game, while not necessary, are quite nice and easy to assemble and play with.

You are correct I only had two strategems, the cursed one (gremlin in the machine or something like that) was worth 2 points. Well worth it imo.

I think planetstrike is pretty fun. As long as you are ok with losing big piles of models you will be ok. It's very bloody and very quick. The terrain is very cool too.

It's refreshing to play a game of 40k that is a little more story driven. I think a planetstrike game would benefit from players that want to push the narrative aspect as much as possible.
