PostSubject: Shevacon February 26th, 27th, 28th 2010   Shevacon February 26th, 27th, 28th 2010 EmptyThu Jan 07, 2010 12:05 pm

Garrison Tyranus is formally invites you to the Shevacon Convention in Roanoke, Virginia on February 26th, 27th, 28th 2010.

SheVaCon retained its name from its origins as the Shenandoah Valley Convention in Staunton, VA. They've since moved to Roanoke because of larger space requirements, and we're hoping to help them further outgrow their current location. Coming up in 2010 is SheVaCon XVIII, so they're a well-established convention.

SheVaCon is a Science Fiction & Fantasy, Horror, Costuming and Gaming Convention. SheVaCon is a Not For Profit organization so all the work you see by the time you arrive at the convention has been done by the volunteering efforts of the Board of Directors and everyone they have been able to talk into donating their time, money or supplies.

WHY IS SHEVACON HERE? For most, SheVaCon is here as a small inexpensive vacation from the real world for 3 fun filled days. Getting together with friends and family to enjoy the genre they love. For others SheVaCon is a educational outlet for the aspiring Artists or Writers. Here we give the Artists and Writers a chance to talk to each other offering workshops and panels on "How to Get Published" or "Tools the Professionals Use". Amateurs can take advantage of a chance to talk to the Pro's, get their feed back and learn some new tricks of the trade. SheVaCon has 2 Scholarships 1 in art and 1 in writing that are awarded each year to qualified applicants. For entering into the Scholarship please view: http://shevacon.org/scholarships.php#Scholarships_Info

Garrison Tyranus will be returning for our fourth year's tour of duty after three successful years, and this one will be much bigger than before. The first year we operated a fan table and put on an armor panel. Two years ago we did a litany of events and activities including the first ever Children Droid Scavenger Hunt and our very own 501st party featuring Scare-e-oke MCed by the Master of Ceremonies Spat. The Ohio Garrison graced us with their presence in not only helping us with every event we put on but in doing their very own The Masters of the Force lightsaber duelists. Their involvement was sincerely appreciated. Since the first year we have hosted the Photos for Charity donations event and helped the con with the costume contest guarding the doors and backrooms costume preparation. Last year we had the honor of hosting two 501st parties and having our brothers join us from Old Line Garrison, Ohio Garrison, Carolina Garrison and the Northeast Remnant Garrison. We also inducted Jeremy Bulloch and Joe Corroney as Garrison Tyranus Honorary members. This year we are focusing our time and energy on 7 specific functions including our grandiose fan table set up, armor panel, Charity photos and two 501st parties. Read on to learn about the rest of the events.

501st EVENTS

To begin, we will be operating a fan table throughout the main operating hours of the con. Be sure to stop by to check the fan table for the latest photos of Garrison Tyranus' past events and information on other 501st events. This year we will be taking Photos for Charity benefit to help raise money for the Shevacon Scholarship Fund and Make-A-Wish. We already have 6 fan groups on board to help us make it a success. So be sure to check it out, as you may just see another cool costumed genre character that you will want to have a picture with. The money will be presented during the Shevacon Scholarship Chairty Fundraiser. So be sure to stop by the table in your 501st costume and take pictures with donating fans!

We will be hosting the third year Children Droid Scavenger Hunt or Children "Build a Droid" Hunt game. Shevacon and Garrison Tyranus have been hard at work on the details of the game, altering it again this year to for a smoother operating game to keep up with the changing times of the Star Wars universe. Fan Group Costume Contest Category for the above mentioned Costume Contest.

With the addition of so many Fan Groups from different genres of the science fiction and fantasy realms to the convention, Shevacon has added a new section to the Costume Contest to highlight their specific skills in the trade. The Fan Group costumes will be judged in most of the same categories as the non-Fan Groups, although held to a higher standard.
• Best In Show - The 'Standout' of all of the Fan Group Costumes
• Best Craftsmanship - This will be a tough one to judge - but we'll be looking at the costume's every detail.
• Best Presentation - Judged on stage of course.
• Best Recreation - Oh we'll be able to tell... it might be difficult given the level of skill and detail - but I'm sure we'll manage.
• Best Skit - Get up there and do your best to entertain us!
• Best Group - 2 or more contestants... let us see what ya got!
• Viewers Choice - voted on by applause from the audience- so strut your stuff!
And yes, there will be awards!

Reintroducing the Best Costume Event of all, The Hall Costume Competition! That's right, just wearing a costume at the con can get you a nifty "Hey that's an awesome costume you got there," nod from our roving secret judges.
This competition runs from the start of SheVaCon on Friday, and goes until 6pm on Saturday of the convention. So throw on your favorite costume, walk around, have a good time, and you just might get a pleasant surprise.
Hall costumes are any costume worn during the con that are not specifically entered into the Masquerade contest. These costumes are judged by roving secret judges and are awarded on the spot by those judges. These awards are a nod to all of the hard work that goes into a costume that is just being worn for fun by a fan. Recipients of the Hall Costume awards are asked to display their costumes during the Masquerade for all to see.
There will be a 'Best Hall Costume' Award that is awarded at the Masquerade. Hall costumes are not subject to the close scrutiny of those entered in the Masquerade, as this is a 'just for fun' segment. Best Hall Costume award is by popular vote. Hall costumes are not required to produce any documentation or reference material at all for their pieces.

Saturday night SheVaCon is proud to present The SheVa Con Throw Down Dance Party . Your badge gets you in. The beats get you down. Because no matter whether you spent your day at panels, looking at animated girls in short skirts, guys in traditional kilts, gaming, LARPing, drinking, shopping, costuming, drumming or simply experiencing life outside of a darkened basement, it's time to celebrate. To clear up any confusion from previous years: The hotel staff requires all guests to remain fully clothed at all times.
All weapons and/or large props are not allowed in the dance…please make arrangements to leave in your room / car ..etc…. Costumes and stationary glow sticks encouraged. Event is 17+. Proof of age must be given if requested at the door.
No alcoholic beverages are allowed inside the event. At any time Shevacon staff or hotel staff have the option of ejecting any one who is in violation of the rules of the dance. We are Saturday night life.

Also a personal favorite game of Spat’s is Kill Dr Lucky. A very interesting and fun live action role playing game that plays like a live action Clue except the players work towards killing Dr Lucky instead of solving who killed him.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_Doctor_Lucky

Want to sing your favorite song? Bring your favorite Karaoke CD to the Karaoke Contest and sing your heart out. You might just win!

On Sunday be sure to check out the art sale and auction.

SHEVACON GUESTS

The WRITER GUEST OF HONOR is Kevin J. Anderson
Kevin J. Anderson is the author of more than one hundred novels, 47 of which have appeared on national or international bestseller lists. He has over 20 million books in print in thirty languages. He has won or been nominated for numerous prestigious awards, including the Nebula Award, Bram Stoker Award, the SFX Reader's Choice Award, the American Physics Society's Forum Award, and New York Times Notable Book. By any measure, he is one of the most popular writers currently working in the science fiction genre.

http://www.wordfire.com

Anderson has coauthored ten books in Frank Herbert's classic DUNE universe with Herbert's son Brian. The initial deal with Bantam Books was the largest single science fiction contract in publishing history.

The first novel, DUNE: HOUSE ATREIDES became a #1 international bestseller and was voted "Book of the Year" by the members of the Science Fiction Book Club by the largest margin in the history of the award. All of the subsequent DUNE novels have also been bestsellers, each one peaking even higher on the lists; the most recent volume is PAUL OF DUNE, a direct sequel to the original classic DUNE; the authors will release JESSICA OF DUNE in August 2009. For further information, see the official "Dune" site, http://www.dunenovels.com. Herbert and Anderson are also co-producers on a major new film of DUNE from Paramount Pictures.
Anderson's highly popular epic science fiction series, "The Saga of Seven Suns," is his most ambitious work, comprised of HIDDEN EMPIRE, A FOREST OF STARS, HORIZON STORMS, SCATTERED SUNS, OF FIRE AND NIGHT, METAL SWARM, and the grand finale, THE ASHES OF WORLDS, as well as the graphic novel prequel, VEILED ALLIANCES. Practically unheard-of in the field, Anderson released all seven large volumes on time, year after year, and he completed the series with Book #7. On his book-signing tour of New Zealand and Australia, METAL SWARM became the #1 best-selling science fiction novel on the continent. The final volume hit general fiction bestseller lists in the UK.
Now that "Seven Suns" is complete -- after eight years of effort -- Anderson is working on an epic nautical fantasy trilogy, "Terra Incognita," about sailing ships, sea monsters, and the crusades. The first volume, THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, will be released internationally by Orbit in June 2009. He has begun work on the second volume, THE MAP OF ALL THINGS, for summer 2010 publication.
Anderson's STAR WARS "Jedi Academy" books were the three top-selling SF novels of 1994. His three original STAR WARS anthologies -- TALES FROM THE MOS EISLEY CANTINA, TALES FROM JABBA'S PALACE, and TALES OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS are the best-selling science fiction anthologies of all time. He has also completed numerous other projects for Lucasfilm, including the 14-volumes in the bestselling and award-winning YOUNG JEDI KNIGHTS series (cowritten with his wife Rebecca Moesta). Anderson is the author of three hardcover novels based on the X-FILES; all became international bestsellers, the first of which reached #1 on the London Sunday Times.
He has also coauthored a major bestseller with Dean Koontz, PRODIGAL SON, which sold more than a million copies in a single year. He has written original novels SLAN HUNTER (a completion of SF grand-master A.E. van Vogt's last novel), HOPSCOTCH, CAPTAIN NEMO, THE MARTIAN WAR, BLINDFOLD, RESURRECTION, INC., and the thrillers ILL WIND and IGNITION (both with Doug Beason). In 1997, during a promotional tour for his comedy/adventure novel AI! PEDRITO!, Anderson set the Guinness World Record for "Largest Single-Author Book Signing." For the Horror Writers Association, he edited the bestselling anthology of humorous horror stories, BLOOD LITE (Pocket Books), containing new works by Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Joe Lansdale, Kelley Armstrong, and many others.
Anderson recently worked with DC Comics to publish THE LAST DAYS OF KRYPTON, an epic science fiction novel that reveals the never-before-told story of the end of Superman's planet. His next novel for DC, due in May 2009, is ENEMIES & ALLIES, telling the first encounter of Superman and Batman in the 1950s during the Cold War.
Anderson has scripted numerous bestselling comics and graphic novels, including Justice Society of America for DC, Star-Jammers for Marvel, Star Wars and Predator for Dark Horse, X-Files for Topps, and Star Trek for Wildstorm. He and his wife Rebecca Moesta also wrote the original comic series and graphic novel, GRUMPY OLD MONSTERS for IDW.
Anderson's research has taken him to the top of Mount Whitney and the bottom of the Grand Canyon, inside the Cheyenne Mountain NORAD complex, into the Andes Mountains and the Amazon River, inside a Minuteman III missile silo and its underground control bunker, onto the deck of the aircraft carrier Nimitz, to Maya and Inca temple ruins in South and Central America, inside NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building at Cape Canaveral, onto the floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange, inside a plutonium plant at Los Alamos, and behind the scenes at FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC. He has climbed all 54 mountain peaks in the Colorado Rockies higher than 14,000 ft elevation, and he has completed more than 300 miles of the Colorado Trail. He also, occasionally, stays home and writes.

His illustrations have been used as cover work for many contemporary writers: Stephen Brust, Hal Colbatch, Tom Cool, Gordon Dickson, David Drake, Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Andre Norton, Jerry Pournelle, and Steve Stirling among others. In 1994 he was awarded a Hugo Award from the World Science Fiction Convention for the United States Postal Service’s Space Fantasy Commemorative Booklet of stamps, the first official recognition by the government of the SF genre.
In 1996, Hickman created the Cthulhu statuette inspired by an earlier cover illustration done for H.P. Lovecraft’s story The Call of Cthulhu (Baen Books). The statuette was produced and distributed by Bowen Designs. A second edition is now available, as well as a bust of H.P. Lovecraft himself.
