So must you have the official GW blister mini to represent a Codex Named Character?

Examples..

Lysander is just a Thunder Hammer/Shield Terminator (why pay $20)
Kharn is a Berserker with a Plasma Pistol ($20 for that fugly model?)
Zagstruk ($22 ... box of Stormboyz $25)

As long as its WYSIWYG wouldn't that suffice?

I'm a bit rusty but I argued this point with a player at 'ard boys last year.

I see no reason, under the conversion and count as rules that you have to use the generic model for special characters....

There are several references in the big book and the guard codex about characters being used differently, for instance if your using calgar in a non ultra marines list.

Personally I don't care as long as it looks different or looks like it should...
I don't know if you do have to have the real model in RTTs. In the CAG tourney as long as it is obvious who it is then have at it

As far as i know you can use whatever mini you want as long as you are clear and all wargear/etc is represented
