| This is the recent GAMEMASTERY flip-mat that I'm referring to.
Bought one?
Thought about it?
IF you have one or have seen it......
From the point of view of a Player Character group"
How would you defend that place? Provision it ? How many guards ? and where?
From the other side -
If your adventuring group had to take it or invade it - What would be your plan of attack ?
IF You are a DM/GM; What kind of ideas does that place give you ? (...beyond just using it for a combat encounter...) Could that location be used as a base of operations for a long-running campaign ? Or maybe the headquarters/lair of a major bad guy NPC?

Not sure the time line of your setting/game. So will go off the assumption a standard fantasy style. Option 1 - Owned by a PC member distant relative (Uncle, Grandfather, etc.) Has been taken over by a band of bandits and need to go help reclaim it. If done so properly the Relative retains possession of it (that allows the PC to have a base of operations, which means you can develop about 150mi radius around it in detail). I would as a GM never give them possession of it would allow them to sell it and gain to much wealth to buy OP items and such. Option 2 - Go Undead, same as above different creatures and theme. Option 3 - Same as other 2, but give them possession of it but make them pay outrageous taxes on it and overhead to keep it stocked and defended while they are out adventuring. A bunch of routes you can go with a small place like that. - Quote :

Send a stealthy type guy in to check it out (rogue, inviz mage, etc). Small place like that everyone guarding it will know each other so prob cant disguise yourself to get in. best bet to scale the wall and pray people don't fail their "shut the F up" rolls, and hope for the best. - Quote :

Count the number of beds, multiply that by 2 1/2 to take in account active guards and general hands on premise. so on that map 12-18 ppl if fully stocked. Standard provisions, weekly stock from local town. If way out maybe once a month stock wagon. Like I said before you can do a TON with a little place like this.

| Maps actually a little skewed if you ask me. Every tower has a catapult on it, but if you look at the number of beds, your garrison would not have enough people to man just the catapults, much less gate guards and battlemounts. Not to mention you still have to account for shift rotations of the guard. | |

The Four Beds shown in the 'barracks" area (common sleeping rooms?) might be bunk beds. -Ed C.

-Ed C. Even if they are bunk beds there are not enough people to man this outpost if it has catapults, which it may have because it is expecting something big lke a horde or something. Yes there is a lot that can be done story wise with it but a lot of these maps i find very lacking. If you go to the library and pick up a couple of castle books you will be able to see how they really were built and have a better way of presenting a session utilizing the building. The Battles: Series is very good aas it will give you several layouts of what transpired and give you good numbers for who and what was in different battles and skirmishes along with detailed step by step invasions of several castles and keeps. Invaluable for studying military strategy for pre modern warfare.

| That map finally got use in my last two game sessions - and in a STAR TREK game too!
The planet that the crew of characters had to visit was called Neural. They were heading there to investigate loss of contact with a Federation reaearch and observation team. The scientists were strudying the native humanoids from a distance. The hill people villagers wore mostly sleeveless tops with leggings and furry boots. The Valley people wore long-sleeved white shirts and had dark hair.
Sound familiar?
Remember the ST: TOS episode "A Private Little War"?
Yeah my players were visiting and investigating that planet. The fort/outpost map was used as a fortification that the valley people had set up with help from those meddling pesky Klingons.
...and yes , my players had fun with the situation.
