PostSubject: Thoughts on Apocalypse   Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:05 pm

One big thing that we saw today was that planning is a huge part of an Apocalypse game.

Going in cold like we did was a pretty bad choice, spur of the minute really doesn't seem to work.

Other than that the stratagems are really fun. The Orbital Bombardment was just plain nasty. Then the opposing team dropping jammers on us really hurt us as two of the guys were very new to playing the game.

Can't wait to get some more going, I really really need to finish my board now.

Good games today (got to notch up another win thanks to Bruce Smile)

It was fun for me to but in general I have to agree with you it wont be easy to just do a pick up game of apoc due to the time it takes to set up and get everything ready.

Yup, I also think having fluffy teams goes a loooong way in Apocalypse.

Also, lets try to get things painted. Some people at least make slight progress, whereas others just decided never to paint. It's a shame, a fully painted game of warhammer is something an awesome sight.

Agreed, I was shocked at the amount of models with no paint or just primed. If need be we should have painting parties. Where we all work on ONE army, for a day or two. We could draw the name out of a hat, or something. Anything to get some color on the table.

We had one of these a few weeks back hosted by Perdair. It was a good time.

I also understand that people like to spend time on their models (I myself spend 3+ hours a mini before it hits the table), but at there should be at least some progress between play sessions.

Talked to Bruce...

I think the biggest problem with you guys and pick up games is that no one knew the rules well enough to really do anything. If people get the rules down pick up games are easier to do. I spent something along the lines of two weeks to get the other group familiar with the rules for Apocalypse, and that payed off (to some minor degree).

I still think more prep work is the major thing. Apocalypse just isn't fun for pickup games from hat I've read of the book and from the game I played.

Giving the game a backstory and theme is where it is at for Apocalypse imo. That and in this kind of game, which is about as meta game as it gets for 40k it would be sick to play with all painted models and terrain. Otherwise that suspension of disbelief just isn't there.

Oh, I agree its more for fluffy stuff than just gaming, and prepping for it will help in the long run, but I'm just saying that you can have a good time playing a pickup Apocalypse game.
