I'll be there. Can models painted by someone other than the owner win as best painted? Who judges the painting?

I may help organize the event, if so I will be judging the painting portion.

Zap...thats just a retarded queston....not insulting your intelligence but why would you think you deserve to win best painted if you didnt paint it? Best painted is to recognize those people who delve into every aspect of our wonderful hobby including the painting. I make good money so does that mean that I should contract Jennifer Halley to paint up some kick ass model for me (would cost a pretty penny i tell you) and then use that to screw other gamers who may not be as good but put their heart and soul into this hobby out of their much deserved recognition? Sorry but I would ashamed to accept a prize for best painted if I didnt paint it.

I think this issue is why many events no longer give a prize for best painted. What happens if a person who loves the game and hobby simply has no talent for painting? Yet they hate showing up with a poor looking army. So they do have someone paint them for them. Or what about an army thats been sold a few times but is well painted?
So heres a question for the group and I may set up a poll for this as well. If there's a painting competition for an event do you think it would be better to have a totally separate event for painting? One where you enter for a single model, unit or other category? If so I would think it would work even better to have the model/s bought prior to the event from the store sponsoring the event. For instance a month before the tournament or whatever the contestants buy the model and register on the spot showing what model/s they are painting.
It would level the playing field a bit so that even if your a pro painter you wouldn't keep using the same ol masterclass model every time.

I think it would be great to get painting contests going again. I remember several where you had to buy a certain model and everyone was painting the same model. Some gave you a month, some only a few hours. I even attempted to paint in a few of them.
On the other subject, because I don't paint well, I don't paint my own armies. I like them to look good and I am not as good as I want my figs to look. Since I don't make good money, in my own way, I work for my paint as well as those that paint. To get my High Elves painted, I had to win a tourney. To get several others figs painted, I had to do consulting work for John Winters and help him with his business. I am also quick to give credit to the painters when someone admires my models.
The question is, how much of the gaming experience is painting vs playing? Is it such a big part that part of whether you win or lose a tourney is based on how well you paint your army or should it be separate? I consider myself a fair player, but a poor painter. Do the people who play me feel less challenged because I did not paint my own figs? Or does that make me less of a gamer because I am not very good at painting?
Just some questions to ponder. I understand where QF is coming from. I have seen his armies and he puts a lot of talent and thought into painting them. Painters should be acknowledged, but should it be part of a tourney? Many of you already know how I feel, but I am one person. What about the rest of you?

Okay, Im going to clarify my position. I agree with Crobar and also dont think that making it a door prize is the answer. I understand what some are saying....I do not believe that painting should be a part of best general and should be a completely seperate event. I understand not everyone can paint well, and well painted.... as Cro said.... really doesnt have anything to do with the challenge that I face when I play him (cheesed out DE list grrrrr....jk Cro no really a dragon and 2 war hydras is balanced....no really Razz ) So I feel this is how it should go, any tourny should require a minimum level of painting, the usual 3 color with basing seems to be a good standard. As long as that standard is met you get max points for the tourny best general painting requirement because lets be honest no one wants to play against a grey plastic or primered army...im mean COME on people watch this:
1. Spray primer
2. Floor polish dip trick
3. Drybrush highlight

Its easy and will make a presentable army that is enjoyable to see on the field. Now that you have the minimum paint requirement met then its just on your tactics to see if you win Best General...then you have a seperate event for best painted that has no points input into the standings of the best general event. That is how most of the tournaments I have seen do it. The problem comes in when they do this tiered thing like this:
1. no paint or primered or not all models painted 0pts
2. basic 3 color with basing 5pts
3. Models are painted to a good standard using layering and highlights 15pts
4. Army has numerous conversions, scenic bases and painting utilizes advanced techniques in blending, shading and highlighting 25pts.

In this type of structure the "casual gamer" (doesnt have the time or skill level of others in painting) is discouraged from participation and I do not find that fair or even good for the health of our hobby. Hope this clarifies my position, I have a very loving an understanding wife who doesnt mind that I ignore her for hours a night to paint these little plastic people (hmmm wonder if she really is that loving or am I missing something here Question ), but I know others do not have that kind of time to devote and I do not want to see those players walk away from, or be discouraged by, a system that prevents their overall enjoyment of the game.

I think I'll keep the door prize, and we will do a separate painting competition another day. That's so if your army is not top tier you can still play and have a chance to win something too.

Retarded question? Ouch. Anyways.

The crux of the problem and why I asked is thus.
"Prove I didn't paint this" or "Prove to me you painted that"
It's not realistic, and not everyone is honest.

Now one suggestion for a painting event would be a speed painting type event. Everyone gets handed a model preferably all the same and an hour to paint it. I would really like this.

I like to encourage painting,it makes everything look nice. So for those that have painted an army ,should be rewarded for there effort. I know not everyone has painted their own army, but they might have payed someone so it looks nicer than maybe they could painted, and they went to the expense to get it painted.
when me group judged armies at Gencon or Orgins they never asked who painted it, We just picked the best painted that was there. Right or wrong someone has the best looking army. So I will try to accommodate all those who want to paint in contest and those who want to play in a contest. If someone wants to do both great. So what do you guys think. Painting contest at a different time ? And keep the door prize on the tourny night?

Do want you want, after all it is your tourny.... The other problem that arises from having no painting requirement is power listing. People just go online see what the latest greatest is, drop a few bucks and say "I win". At least with painting it takes a few before a unit is ready for the field, or if its not ready they lose points for not have a painted army and have a harder time taking best general. Again I think you should have a "min" standard, but thats me. I for one hate playing against primered or grey plastic armies...it takes away from the enjoyment. But whatever....
