Wargaming Club in Milford

I play military strategy boardgames at Yottaquest thursday nights and one of the players informed me that a columbus, oh based military boardgame club CABS (google CABS and war games and it should come up, I think their website is buckeyboardgame or some such thing) is looking to start a wargaming club in Milford. They would either be renting or purchasing a building there, building up a gaming library and dropping in a bunch of tables. There would be a monthly membership fee for upkeep etc. I know little about the group but do know it is military boardgame oriented (combat commander, fighting formations, all the hex based stuff) not minatures but really do not know.

Right now the group is just completing a survey of interest. If you are interested just let me know and I will pass it along. There is no obligation at all. If the group does start up I will post information here and send an email to anyone who initially shows interest.

All I can think is wow, cincy is absolutely SWIMMING in place to play! Between the several gaming stores that have opened in the past couple of years to this, it's stunning to somebody who remembers when Cincy was Comic Book World, and some random hole in the wall (which changed from year to year)

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying there is not anywhere to play as the area offers plenty of places. This is a bit different though. I belonged to a club many years ago and it is just a different set-up than playing at a store (not that I do not appreciate the stores and I am a big advocate of supporting them through purchases as opposed to online shopping) especially in the war game area where players are hard to come by. Warhammer people fall from the sky compared to strategy war game folks.

I like the idea of a gaming club. This way like me, you go to play in a store and you feel pressured on buying something

This is very true. I've often felt like it would have been better for some stores to operate almost like pool halls, where you rent a table for a period of time.

Sounds cool, but Milford is just too far for me - I rarely make it out to EGC and I really like it.

I would not object to a table fee wherever - if the tables were nice & had cool terrain & stuff...

I always figure my pop, paint and occasional White Dwarf & model is my table fee. I never have trouble dropping 10-20, but I don't get to game evry weekend, either.

Same here. I'm on the West Side and really the best place to game for me is Yotta, and that's still a 30 minute haul from me. Don't get me wrong, Up Up and Away, Kendall is pretty cool about getting you some game space for a game but he's largly a comic book store. So us West Siders, it's just hard to get to were all the gaming places are. That's why I don't get out and game as much like I used to.

With World of Hobby, it was pretty central for everyone. That's what I liked about it. It took me 70 minutes since I'm so close to 74/75 to get up there.

I've had similar thoughts, I think GW did it right, locating in the center of cincy, though I don't think I would have chosen Paxton Square, rent is probably high enough to give you a nose bleed.

Yup...and just like Steve said...he's only open for a limited part of the day and only has space for 2 tables.....

I prefer the Gaming Tables to be free and available to play on. But with the understanding that if you buy online then the store would not last long. So as Scott said buy drinks, minis, and dont forget White dwarfs! All those go to keeping your favorite stores open. I buy exclusively from local game stores these days, even the Gamesworkshop store. Having a pay to play table will discourage people to play and lessen the amount people going to the store, thus reducing the possibility to sell more product to customers.

As I have said for a long time it is extremely important to support your local stores especially during these difficult times. Think before you buy online is it really worth the 20-30% off or more so you get it cheaper than to spend the little extra at a local store that allows you to use their tables.

So if everyone did buy locally the stores could afford free gaming tables!!!

Even if you buy a few drinks and snacks it helps the store...

In my situation yes it is. If you figure out how much money you spend on gas compared to a discount and or free shipping after you spend enough (which I do) then the 45 minute drive and wasting 1/2- 1/2 a tank is not worth it.

The economy has nothing to do with it for me. I buy things from UU&A, and I buy from GW store. I also buy through mini market. Getting to the east side is just a pain in the ass.

As for the Gaming club.....would be awesome....on the Eastside, wouldn't be coming out.

If we had something more "Central" with great store hours it would be different. But we don't right now and that's a shame. Granted I have other places to play over here, I just don't support those stores except for Yotta and UU&A.

While I agree with you 100%, and only buy from the stores I play at, the reality is that most people don't seem to do this. The moment the store owners back is turned the discussion always seems to turn to this or that great deal they just got, though not from the store!

The point is if YOU buy local you are helping by setting an exampleto everyone else.

I know it happens as you said andrew cause i see it alot. i just try to explain that yes that person saved money it wasnt necessarily beneficial for the person to keep a gamestore open for future play.



CJ, Any local store is good not just the ones out of range of you. you are close to Up, Up, and Away, gw, and yotta right? go shop at those places... if distance is an issue

Besides...isn't it our right to buy from who we want??

The merits of supporting a FLG are obvious and our local shops have NEVER (IME)pressured players to 'pay-to-play'
we all know the cost of overhead is what makes retail prices what they are and online prices lower
we all know CJ starts and quits games every 2 months and doesn't like driving out the the East side
so can we put a wrap on it?

I'd like to re visit the question of "WHY"

Why a CLUB over 'another' game store?
Why Milford,(where there are 3 stores within 10 min of each other) as opposed to the West, South or side or North central ?

Clubs are 'exclusionary'/exclusive by definition
why the need to 'survey' other wargamers

if renting or buying a seperate space is a more desirabel option, why not just go full out and foccus on a Historical wargame store?

Is there some thing wrong with the Newport games store?

There is always gaming allowed at the GW store in Hyde Park on a first come first serve basis. I am constrained by the hours I am open and we will discuss purchase of product since I am a business. I always welcome people who wish to come in to play. I only offer the GW product itself but there are a multitude of eating establishments in the plaza with the store. We offer instore ordering of GW product with no shipping cost but it does need to be picked up instore for free shipping. We also do not charge for gaming as well and we have a growing community of players so come on in and check out your Cincy GW store.

This kind of went in a direction I did not care to follow as I strongly believe the local stores should be supported as all locally owned business should be patronized. I felt the need though, to comment on the above creation of the defiintion of "club". There is no definition that I am aware of that specifically links exclusionary or exclusive to club. Clubs are simply groups of individuals who come together over a common interest. You can have exclusive clubs but clubs in and of themselves are not exclusive by definition. If anything I believe a club would be another great avenue to promote our local stores.

I think I did come accross strongly in my interpretation

but I don't think unjustly;
your 'Idea' of "Club" (as I now recognize, correct me if I'm wrong) is more of a 'specialized interest player group'

we've had issues in greater Cincinnati with "Game CLubs"
there have been groups that ARE exclusionary, that only supports local stores of they can exploit a tournament sceen for the prize support, extort sales or block out events with their own players, preventing other local players from competing
Some players have even been soured, frightened and bullied away from other legit shops because they were called "CLUBS" and wrongly told that to be able to play, they had to "Join the club" when that was NEVER the case

so when you bring up that the "Club" is looking for building space...
it was easy for me to make the connection
special interest group+ "Club" x Building= (ability to be) Exclusionary

as I said, if I got it wrong... then I apologise for 'reading into the intent'

I still feel like the other questions bear asking

as a resident in the central part of Cincinnati(Kenwood), I long for a location more Central or Even West, as many of my friends Live in Westchester or Cheviot
what is it Milford has over the other areas...?

what is wrong with the stores that exist now, what is it they are doing that is a "turn off" or that fails to accomidate?

Glock Elf Hyde Park isn't far from Kenwood and we wouldn't think of offering any kind of exclusive club. The idea of supporting your local store is also something I agree with as well.

As I said it was only a look to see if there was any interest. I have since found out the group from Columbus is not actually looking to start a club here they just have a lead on the backroom of business which is willing to rent out their space to a gaming club. That is the club in Columbus' only involvement.

I have only been in Cincinnati about 5 years so I do not know the history and have only gotten back into gaming in the last year so I know even less of the gaming area.

I play at Yottaquest when I can and have found Matt and his people to be a most excellent group and have never once felt obligated to buy a thing. I am only now getting ready to wander out to the other stores as I hunt down FOW players. I got my army painted and a bunch of scenery tiles completed now I just need players.

but
Newport has some serious fans as well

and Clint at Eastside Games also has a serious interst in the game- and some very nice terrain!
