| What in this list is just plain nasty?
It seems to be uber elite, with some fodder (maruaders) sprinkled in.
Also, am I missing something or are there barely any ranged units or attack sans magic?

| Chosen Knights kill just about anything they can get into close combat with, and most of the other units are great in CC as well. I think they intentionally kept them from having shooting to balance them out, so usually you play water/air against them and try to stay away while whittling them down. | |

| yeah, no fun.
Marauder Calvary can get some ranged but they come in at 11 points a pop. Oh well, may still go with them anyway.
It's either this, bretts or vampire counts... any advice on which army to go with? Vamps would mean waiting til they get their re-release.

| I'm hoping the new Vamp army will actually be worth playing, I guess it all come down to what your looking for?
Are you looking for uber powerful stuff that seems impossible to kill?

| Look into Beasts of Chaos as well. Herds can really support ranked Infantry and you gain access to Minotaurs and other big uglies. Some nice magic weapons there as well.
Strength of Mortal Chaos imo is their Characters and Core Chariots.

| Yeah, their characters and chariots are nasty.
Really I just like the models, big fan of the regular chaos warriors to be honest. The knights are also awesome.
Then again, I really like the Vampire Count stuff I have been seeing, although I'm still not sure how far down the pipeline that is.
Just seems like I would be playing a pretty 1 dimensional game if I played Hordes. Perhaps Beasts would be the way to go, more varied and so on.
What about Marking the troops, this get done often or are they better vanilla?

| Nurgle is a bit overpriced for what you get.
Slaanesh is a double edged sword. Immune to Psychology is great, but also means you cannot flee as a charge reaction. This for that.
Tzeentch is solid if you go the heavy magic route.
Khorne is nasty, but Frenzy is a bit fickle. You would need unKhorne units to help funnel them in (Warhounds come to mind) otherwise say a unit of Khorne Knights could be led around the table quite easily but cheap bait units (like a 50pt Giant Eagle)

| Hmm, ok. So perhaps undivided would be the way to go for now, with a few demons sprinkled in.
Is the lack of ranged weaponry something to be concerned about?

| I don't think they were ever completely axed... but they are the next release for fantasy, some stuff has already started popping up. | |

| Chaos actually did get some range in Storms of Chaos, but GW thought better of it and decided that Storms of Chaos is not allowed in competition. Chaos is also the only army that can use units from teo codex's. Their strength is in their characters and they have some special characters that are just plain hard to beat. They are a very elite army, but can be supllemented with some very cheap troops. The chaos players I have gone against just simply ignore the shooting expecting that even half their force can mop up once they get there and they do have some fast units and units that can spawn anywhere on the board. | |

| The majority of incoming shooting is Str3 which means it will be tough to wound your studs and you get your full save. | |

| Demon heavy may be the way to go, so that I can use my models in 40k too once the demon codex comes out late in the spring.
That or I will be going Brettonians.

A looong time ago when they first split the Undead GW was printing books often to keep up with their changing minds. The current book is just old, not as old as the High Elves but they may have gotten a new book in the last half year or longer since my last game. Other than being a bit out of date I rather like my Undead. I think they are still a good army. Have they have updated the Hight Elves? Always felt bad for Billy back in the day because it seemed the GW kept shafting that army for some reason. PS yes the undead have the axe, it is in Krells profile in a white dwarf. Which makes sense since in life he was a disciple of the Chaos cause.

| I think the Undead have been rolled into the Vampire Counts. Not sure on that though. High Elves have been updated, earlier this year in fact. EDIT: last year | |

EDIT: last year That is wonderful news. There just wasn't something right about never losing to them. Granted I am going to be disgusted when that High Elf mage can wag his finger and destroy my ubber sword and army, then kill my general, and win the game before it got going. But they really needed an update badly. You are correct Matt. With the Undead about three editions ago their were rumors about a split into dry (Tomb Kings) and wet (Vampire) undead. It hurt having half of my models made useless but with the rule changes I had to buy boxes of skeletons and zombies to get back into the game so it worked out in the end. Long ago the Undead Army book was a very different creature. I miss my Nagash... may he someday return to finish the failure that upstart man-god delivered so long ago.
