PostSubject: Reaper Bones Kickstarter minis   Reaper Bones Kickstarter minis EmptyWed Jul 31, 2013 9:12 am

I just noticed that I haven't posted any stuff on here in quite a while, and I've actually been doing some painting since I got my Reaper Bones Kickstarter pledge.... So, I figured I'd rectify that!

The first three I painted were an Norgol, Irongrave Knight, Darkrasp, Death Priest, and the Eyebeast:

Trista, female warrior (converted with the shield from the Paladin from the kickstarter):

I have a couple more almost finished, but this is the start! Only about 180 left to paint!

Love the fire elemental. I want to start on the giants but have so much Circle to paint. Thinking it will be my reward for actually finishing my 50 points.

LOL, yeah, I know the routine, MasterRabbi. I've got the Bombshell Bombardier and the Druid Gone Wilder minis that I've had partial paint on for a long time, and a unit of Khador Winterguard, a demolition Man-o-war, a Skarsfell Griffon, still partially painted as well that I'm putting off as I paint these. Not to mention the 30 40k Orks I'm STILL painting for someone as well.... Though, of course I already have over 100 points of Circle and Khador already painted, so I don't have to worry too much about having painted armies.

But, once I get done with the few Bones that I've got on my painting table now, I'm going to start my Kaladrax! I just finished filling in some of the gaps, and once I straighten the bones sticking out of the wings, I'll be able to prime it! These are amazing minis for the price, and I'm extremely glad I got in on the kickstarter!

Should we post all Bones here?   I bought in to let my 5, 7 and 9 year old have some figs to paint.

What is your thought on the product?   My thought is that it is hit or miss.  Some is way too soft (can't support weight of legs), and some with really soft detail.  Overall the product meets my needs.

Here is my Son's Dragon

Overall, I like the Bones material. I've had no issues with any of them being soft, or having issues with soft details, so I may have gotten a good batch of minis. I think the fact they were trying to product over 1.4 million minis in a really short time, and them being produced in China, probably contributed to the inconsistency. Now that they have the kickstarter out of the way, I think the new stuff will probably end up being a LOT better consistency-wise. They also bought some injection machines for their factory, so I think having some production in house will help as well. I believe I read somewhere they were wanting to move all of their production in house?

The things I like about the material: Painting on them is extremely easy. The paint sticks, even if you bend the parts around, no flaking or breaking of the paint. Drop the mini on the floor from a decent height and everything is as good as before. Most of them that had weapons and such bent out of shape either popped back into shape just sitting around, or after a boil then dip in ice procedure. They're LIGHT!

The thing I don't like: Some of the stuff that's bent out of shape doesn't go back into shape, even after the boiling/icing routine. The male Storm Giant's sword I've boiled twice, and it still droops (get your mind out of the gutter!!). The fact that they had to fill the body cavity for Kaladrax :(I'm attempting to come up with a way to make fake skin to cover that up, but haven't come up with a good way yet...

One last thought: it's almost like what GW wanted FineCast to be, but utterly failed to deliver on.

Good points.

I actually like the FCast product. I think the detail is deeper, don't have bending issues and it is easy to work with. I know that lotta folks have issues with the bubbles/etc but I haven't found them way off as yet with most of my purchases of the material.

Do you find any issues w/ the "primer" activating the plastic. ie. So I used my Krylon black camoflauge primer without issue but then when I used the rustoleum camo black the figs became "sticky" and didn't dry. Almost as if the propellent in the lacquer ate away at the plastic. I threw out a number of figs with that issue and may change to an airbrushed primer on them.

Regardless kids like them. Try a hair dryer with your "bending problem". Sounds weird but a little hit with it seems to make the plastic remember where it was supposed to be. I watch swords regain their rigor.

FineCast may be better now, but I've seen and heard too many horror stories. I gave up on GW, so once I'm done painting the Orks I have for Bert and getting the Smaug mini when it comes out (as long as it looks like what the previews for the movie show of him), I probably won't buy anything new from them much. But, that's not a surprise, the only things I've bought from them recently was the Zombie Dragon when that came out, the new Black Knights, and I think Krell in finecast (which is why I brought up finecast... went the GW store and out of 5 blisters of it, there was only one that wasn't severely deformed by bubbles).

I haven't had all that much issue with the primer, but I use sandable car primer for them. Can't remember if I have Rustoleum or Duplicolor at the moment, but other than it not getting in the fine detailed and having to coat with Abbadon Black to get in the crevasses, it works pretty well. That's hit or miss, though, I think it's more because of when I prime as opposed to the primer and the mini. If I try to prime when it's starting to get dark outside, I tend to not coat it as well. The Reaper brush on primer has worked out pretty well too, and when I get a chance to get some, I've been wanting to try the GW brush on primer as well. The Eyebeast I didn't even prime, I just painted abbadon black directly on it and painted up from there.

Now, if I could just find a good excuse for having a hair dryer at my house.... lol

Hairdryer = win for mini painting and resin straightening. I have a dedicated one. Especially to dry layers or oils...etc. I have a dedicated one in my paint/assembly area. Best $10 you'll spend.

The GW brush on primer isn't bad but compared to their black aerosol primer the black color on the models are night and day.  The brush on looks almost like you put the model in black wash, which depending on the way you want to paint your model isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't leave a coat like the aerosol does.  It does do a good job of spot priming for spots you miss with the spray you just have to take in effect the lighter black coat it leaves behind when painting your model.  For the price it is a reasonable product and it doesnt have that primer smell we all love so you can do it in your house without a huge smell issue but I can't say I would do a whole model with it but for spot priming it is spot on.

Thanks, Baltak. I hadn't found any reviews on it or anything, so wasn't sure if it was any good yet or not. Maybe I'll just pass on it then, as the Reaper brush on does an exceptional job of coating, as long as you lay it on well enough.
