Tau vs.? Empty
PostSubject: Tau vs.?   Tau vs.? EmptyMon Jan 14, 2008 12:31 pm

How do the Tau stand up to Orks? Just wondering how they are able to be as great as they seem to be touted about. They have not so great BS real crappy WS and don't seem to have too many long ranged weapons that would stop Orks or nids from slaughtering them in hand to hand?

It seems that if I take an Ork hoard they can't kill enough before I can get to them, or hell even a standard IG army with tanks they are out shot. So what am I missing?
And OMG the Orks are so much nastier in the new codex!!!

You are missing the fact that Tau can outmaneuver Orks.

They have the hammerhead, which can keep moving 12" each turn (thus being only glanced) and dealing out massive damage to armor. They even have the sKy Ray (not normally an option I care for) which against orks can mow down infantry.

Then they have Crisis suits. Which, when played correctly will remain out of charge range, all the while dishing out massive anti horde fire.

Plus the basic Pulse Rifle has a better range than a boltgun, and is str5. Nothing to sneeze at.

Orks actually tend to rely on their shooting againt Tau, as a good tau player will not let you hit their lines before turn 5 or 6, if you hit them at all.

Perhaps you just haven't played a good tau player?

And if I can hit them on turn 2? which is a distinct possibility especially with the new Codex?
Not to say that the player I have been playing against is great but I have been reaching him on turn 2 in the three games we played...
And not just against Tau.

And any other comments?
I do Value your comments MAtt but I am hoping others will chime in here too...

The more I hear the better I can understand the Tau...

If you hit the Tau on turn 2 then the Tau player deserves to lose.

I can tell your opponent does not use Kroot Wink

yeah a Tau player should never be right up on their edge (at least not on foot). So hitting them with Storm Boyz turn 1 or 2 will take some doing when faced with their guns.

Right. Folks here (re : Bruce Wink ) under appreciate the finer things in Tau society known as the Kroot...

WoT! ..but KroOt have noe armoure sAve! WtF! Laughing

Anyways, for 70pts you get a squad/unit/group of which can Infiltrate, hold its own in H2H and even provide S4 covering fire within dem dar woods. I recommend 3 clicks of 10 which is a steal.

Depending on the mission, deploy waay back all your XV8s, vehicles and... well that should do it. Use your Kroot as Infiltrate pushers (if mission allows) or set them up on your front lines hopefully in cover. These are your speed bumps, but not any ordinary speed bumps siree. Speed Bumps with skill. They can easily contest loot or quarters. They can easily hunker down and be an effective pillbox. They can easily die and/or hold up units of oh, say Orksus. Whatever role, they can do it well, they can do it cheaply and they can do it or else...

...or else if ignored they will charge in with 30 WS4 S4 H2H attacks Cool

In the end Kroot provide the Tau with time. Your opponent cannot ignore them and win. Even if the Kroot shuffle left, shuffle right and then die they did their job. Its now Turn 4 and the rest of your forces have either positioned their firing lanes for maximum point denial or simply pasted the opposition. Sweet eh?

I am also wondering how mechanized your opponent is (having not come from the kroot school that Marc did). Mech tau really are the way to play right now (Marc played them with a nice measure of anti infiltrating Kroot).

What is his list/play style?

Why isn't he on the boards? Wink

I have to agree with Matt and Marc on this one. The Tau have a lot of mobility and i dont think that a veteran player will let those stormboys in on turn 2. Also lets not forget that just a couple of years ago that Tau was stomping horde nids, which i think was a better list than the current Ork.

Ah but all of you were thinking inside the box...

As I said at first... 2 words Boss Snikrot turn 2!!! Say hello to my little friends.

Turn 2 possibility of knocking on the back door and assaulting anything not close enough for a well timed waaagh!!!!
Seriously though my brother did post his list earlier but all he has is the battle force and a devil fish with warriors. He proxies the devil fish for heavies. He is ok untill I assault him with boss snikrot and get help from the stormboyz and the warphead. I lay down cover fire with zzap guns and a shokk attack gun (hehe I likiee again).
The fearless thing is maddening cause I take huge ass man units so very hard to break the orks from shooting them.

I am taking next semester off so I hope to get in some games vs. other Tau so I can see how they play and see what else My bro needs to get.

I do think the Kroot are the way to go as well Marc.

Tau vs.? Empty
PostSubject: Re: Tau vs.?   Tau vs.? EmptyMon Jan 28, 2008 12:30 pm

Ok getting kinda frustrated now. Maybe its just cheesey or maybe I missed something.
The Tau have been slaughtered every time I play them, I do want to play more Tau to see if it works.
The Tau are not on the deployment line.
2 units of Fire Warriors
1 unit of Krootox
1 Hammerhead
1 Sky thingy tank type
1 unit of the stealth suits
1 leader
1 drone unit

I have out shot him every game mainly because of numbers. Enough Orks are not picked off to make them care that they lost half their unit.
Boss Snikrot rumbles on from any board edge and assaulting that turn to get into combat. The Stormboyz are deepstriking using Zagstruk.

The 4 Deff Gunz along with a Big shoota and Shokk Attack Gun wipe out the Kroot. The 2 units of Boyz get across the board quickly on trukks and charge with help of a waaagh by turn 2!

And yes it was quite unfair that Old Zogwart turned his commander into a squig on turn 2!

So anywho Are there any body available for a game with Tau on saturday?
Please help I want to understand how the Tau work with all the dumb rapid fire weapons and 2 BS?

By all means, set up a game Bruce.

But no offense, you don't hold much of a candle to Marc's Tau playing.

Still, Makari needs someone to prove that Tau can hold their own. So why not set up a game?

If Ryan hadn't just started playing Tau and had time, I would suggest him. And Bruce, Matt is right. Marc's Tau were uber-killy to just about everything in LOS (which was a lot).

Cool responses so anyone got time this weekend to play? I'd prefer to play closer to Milford but if it comes down to it I would travel to Scifi.

I'd be up in a couple of weeks if you want to play against some Tau. I'm not the best but sure as hell can easliy take our Bruce with my techniques. I think if out of anyone besides Marc, I'd give you a good run. I have a great list. Playing some Kroot, suit heavy and have alot of speed.

You lmk.

Cheers for the props fellas Embarassed
Its all about going "point denial" or "delayed inevitable" though. Not very fun for your opponent.

Just ask poor Dennis

I can proxy Tau for you maybe the 9th/10th weekend unless you can stop over during the week. We could always set up a table in our parking lot Laughing

I might be able to play and cj I dought u could kill my tau besides not haveing the suits guns glued on I can take any unit in the tau(besides multi kroot squads I can at least take 2 of each). My only problem is if I use to many tanks or suits I run out of drones(only really will happen in apoc anymore anyways so no big deal there). On if I can play I need to know were and how far away it is from were I live before I can say yes or no.
