Looks like sponson weapons can be placed in 3 different locations ala the Land Raider.

Where do you measure shooting distance on a vehicle again?

I believe it is from the gun barrel?

Nope, from the turret the gun is positioned on. To avoid conversions adding distance to weapons. Although I suppose you could still add distance by making the turret bigger!

I guess then Line of Sight would be the only reasoning to position the sponsons toward the rear

that and there are layouts for these things, like sponsons on landraiders. they are meant to go in a specific spot. But people move them
