| Ok so IF you travel out of town and have never been to an actual GW store I have a few tips for ya... 1. Don't go running thru the mall like an idiot with a big sheepish dumb animal smile on your face. 2. Don't go sliding into the store on your knees yelling I'm free! pulling your shirt off. 3. Let the kind Mall gaurds local police and FBI agents give you the drug test and ANY search they request. 4. When in the company of the police do not refer to your armies as your soldiers of destiny that will rule the world. 5. DO NOT BRING credit cards, checks, or cash into the store... 6. They don't appreciate you removing everything from the shelves so you can see just how much it would all cost and keep removing items until it reaches the amount you can afford... ie $20, so a blister... 7. DO bring a towel and keep the drool to a minimum. 8. DO NOT try distracting the clerk by pointing and saying whats that and running with an armful of stuff, the police don't appreciate this either. 9. Do call your wife and apologze for the second mortgage you are taking out for a "couple" of minis!
So ok I'm here in Georgia for work and someone told me about the GW store in the mall of georgia... so I went in and was enjoying it. it was nice. And yes i bought way too much! A Space Marine Company Box, vampire black coach... wow just wow!

| Actually, there's a GW near Detroit, located in West Oaks Mall, in Novi, MI.
I grew up about 10 minutes away from it. I visited less than a month ago, it's still doin fine.
Depending on how fast you drive, it's about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour trip, all along I-75.

| There are three or four near me right now. I have been playing in the GW store (well only two games) and i went to the midnight launch for 5th Ed there. Now, my thoughts on GW stores. 1) They are overpriced... 2) Run by people that are normally pretty removed from the game compared to LGS's. 3) Clerks are full of advertising speak, the other day, i had a clerk try for about 10 minutes to sell me the tech-marine with servo harness because he "is really good at repairing the whirlwind i just bought" 4) They yell for people to screams "Waaaagh!" which all of the poor kids do (they don't know any better). 5) I watched a game of 5th with a store clerk against one of the aforementioned "poor kids". I don't think he even read the book before playing. He tried to argue with me that plasma weapons ignore cover because they are "template" weapons. When i tried to reason with him that they use a template, but dont have template in their profile... he told me "we play by our own rules here"... good for you. 6) They yell for people to screams "Waaaagh!" which all of the poor kids do (they don't know any better). 7) During the midnight launch they gave away copies of the 4th edition book as door "prizes"... It really is amazing how cheap this company can be. No i don't want green templates they are exactly the same as the template i already have... please don't ask any more (4 times during checkout is enough). 9) My biggest problem with these stores is that they are a pretty lame face for our hobby. When a parent walks in and see a few sweaty old men (in a store that smells like butt crack) yelling at their children in "orkish" no wonder games like ours have a bad stigma associated with them. Now, that being said... they are a cool thing to have associated with your hobby (it's good to have retail stores, and it separates GW from most of the competition). I do prefer a good hobby focused tournament. I feel the tournament scene, while hard to approach at first, really shows how cool/interesting/rewarding a hobby like this can be. Especially to worried parents (i cant even count the number of times i am looked at strange by a parent when their kid comes up to ask what im playing). and im done. Sorry got a big carried away there. I'm off my soapbox now. Oh and if they open a GW near enough for any you guys to work there... you guys better jump on that shit asap, it would easily be the coolest GW store in the world. | |

| I went to the Battle Bunker in Chicago and that palce was sweet. The cleark actually knew a few things about the hobby. Battle Bunkers are better than the stores. | |

| I don't know what the stores are like down here, but the one in Novi is a lot better than what Matt describes. They still get the kids to shout Waaaagh (occasionally), and they do perhaps a little too much advertising, but overall they:
1) Don't smell bad. 2) Aren't annoying. 3) Are totally geeked about the hobby.
The manager for the past five years or so, Dan, had a lot to do with this. He was pretty awesome. He's gone now though, so I'm hoping the store doesn't realign with the "be annoying, don't bathe" policy that appears to afflict so many GW stores.
So I'd disagree that they're all a lame face for our hobby.

| For the most part they are. Growing up in England I saw perhaps 15 different stores, and from the 5 or so i have seen here. Not much of a difference. The one in Norwich in the UK was pretty good, it was the same deal with the store you talk about... a really good manager. I think that makes all the difference. | |
