| So I picked this model up for the GW contest this month (figs = to or larger than a D-naught). Laid down the base reds with an airbrush and moved on to base coating the model starting w/ the metals. Still thinking about how to jazz up the paint job a bit. I find the new(er) CSM armor on the Fiends and Drake to be difficult to pull off a 'look; due to the break up of the armor pieces by the ornamentation. Maybe I'll just work on the base a bit. I've been asked what are thre reds: All are badger Minitaire with exception of black primer. Primer: Black Base: Innards H1: Angelic Red H2: Nebula Red H3: Warning Yellow. Hope to post pics as I move along. Time 1.5 hrs.

| Another 45 min of work: Total 5hr 15min This time highlighting the edges of the metal w/ Sycrah bronze. Then I begin to work the color and shine down with thinned bestial brown. This will go to a dark brown later. The goal is to be somewhere between the metal and a very dull shadow creating a pop in high low. It is really tough to pick up in the cell phone direct light pictures due the the fact that the metal (where it hasn't been dulled is extremely bright). In the pics of the top you can see some of the color differences and where the blending will take place between zones. Just a lesson in patience. I've also painted the "bone/teeth" in Bestigor Brown (mostly b/c I couldn't find my yellower brown to start but it really doesn't matter.

| Finally got the gold to a state I am happy with. More red brown (Bestial Brown GW) shading followed by a deeper shade of camoflauge medium brown (Vallejo Air) to blend between that and agrax. Highlights began on the steel portions. An initial drybrush of Leadbelcher followed by a more targeted highlight w/ a detail brush of Runefang steel. Difference between the steel in this pic and prior are subtle but they trust me...they are there. On Deck for the steel: improve the shading in the hollows of the steel with some agrax. Higher tones with straight silver. More shadding w/ a dull color like Vallejo Model Chocolate brown and possibly rust tones. Time 1 hour Total Time 6hr 15min Anyone have some basing suggestions?

| Another 1.5 hours of work. This time on the steel and flesh. Steel received some Agrax and Rust wash to places. Teeth/bone received a highlight of Flayed one flesh, followed by white. Last a bit of Reikland fleshshade at the tops. The flesh got 2 highlights and some added blue hues in the shadows. I'm getting bored with the figure at this point and just need to finish it off. | |

| Another update. Just working on power cables and blues. Not sure I'm pulling it off well (at least in the chimney stacks). Slow going. | |

| Sorry the last pic was a bit fuzzy. Phone camera wasn't stable. Here is one of the final pics. So between the last pic and this. Painted the blues on the power cables. Base dark blue, H1 of a magic, followed by H2 of the blue edge color (forget the name). Last a bit of white into the high blue just at some points to catch light. I also tried a blue glow in the stacks. It didn't turn out as I hoped. I brought red back into some of the skin with a very dilute glaze (about 8:1 water: paint). I used Nebula red by Minitaire although wazdakka or other red would be fine. This was place carefully around eyelids, nose and lips. Additionnally added to blood drops and musculature. I focused more around the metal/Flesh borders in order to give the skin a stressed/irritated feel to it. Base: Base is a resin base from Jeff Wilhelm's www.dragonforge.com He is local and his casting is immaculate. Base was dry brushed with a Black Grey from Vallejo Air, followed by Dawnstone Grey by GW, Adeptus Grey by GW and finally a bit of Wych Flesh by GW. All drybrushing. The base was then given a wash (well..sludge application) which is a mix of Pigment by Mig and Isopropyl alcohol, avoiding the grey and metal, trying to concentrate it in the hollows. Very liberal, be sloppy. Metal areas were given a quick paint w/ Ledbelcher and some thinned Agrax was added to define shadows under brick, on the metal parts. A highlight of Ungor flesh was done on the base, over the dried pigments. A bit of rust was pushed around too near the metal parts. A little green spot color was added. | Final pic looks great. The model and work you did is fantastic overall. The base is a real nice touch. Thanks for the links and explanation of the materials used.
Did you pin the maulerfiend to the base or glue it directly on? | |
