Bought the empire army at the con and now started to put it together goign to have loads of ?'s...to start whats a good size for state troop units. I have so far 10 halberdiers and got twenty more to put togehter. Any help is much appreciated.

depends on what you are using them for. 20 seems to work unless you are using them as attachments, then most people tend to go with 10.

Empire deserves big units of 30. 10 for detachments.

I love empire. My First and all time favorite army
With the new rules this is what i recomend
If you want to use state troops take them in blocks of 25. Use the Spearment or Swordsmen allways with full comand. I use combat detachments of 3 accross by 2 or 3 deep. I like to take my shooters at detachments of 5 to 8 men.
Recently I do take a unit of 10 hand gunners with a champion with a hochland long rifle and mounted level 2 wizard in it. Its working pretty well.
With the advent of the vampires however I've been taking 2 units of flagelants, because if you take a warrior priest (Which if its not in your army you're crazy) one of them counts as core.
I take free company or halberd combat detachments
I like using archers as a skirmish screen for my state troops or flagos.
Vanilla knights are fantastic, I take 1 group of five with out comand and a large group and stick a warrior priest in it.
For Special
I allways take a cannon
I used to greatswords, but they're too expensive and not immune to psyche.
I tried the outriders, but I don't like how they don't move and shoot
Pistoliers are the best fast cav in the game I take two units
Inner circle knights are allright if you have the extra points.
Flaggos= Pure awesome
Helblaster= It will blow up, but its a hell of a deterent
Hellstorm never used it. Not sure
I allways take a Captain as a bsb and stick him in the state troops (personally I like to give him a ward save)
I allways take at least 1 warrior priest
Ususally run a level 2 wizard (lore of light)

For my lord I used to run a grandmaster but since vampires and deamons i allmost allways run a Archlector on war altar.
